Have you ever found yourself getting in your own way of achieving a goal or a job promotion, or shrinking back to old habits when everything seemed to be going well?
This feeling of self-sabotage, as it's called, is surprisingly common.
Self-sabotage is any behavior or thought pattern that undermines our own success and well-being. It can manifest in many ways, such as procrastination, self-doubt, negative self-talk, and self-destructive behaviors. Self-sabotage can be conscious or unconscious but always leads to negative consequences. It can stem from a variety of reasons, such as fear of failure, fear of success, low self-esteem, and past traumas.
It can also be a way of protecting ourselves from disappointment or rejection. However, self-sabotage ultimately prevents us from reaching our full potential and living a fulfilling life. The first step in overcoming self-sabotage is to recognize it. Pay attention to your thoughts and behaviors and identify any patterns that may be holding you back. Once you have identified your self-sabotaging behaviors, you can challenge them.
Tabitha Azor is a Brooklyn-based licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She is a Christ-following Haitian-American and mother of 2.
