What’s Up Overcomers,
This week, I sat down with Shelly Najjar, a Nutrition Mindset Coach and Owner of Confident Nutrition. She helps women with a lot going on to care for themselves, while reaching their goals. Her specialty is addressing the why and how we eat, blending mindset and practical tips to make nutrition and self-care easier. Shelly draws on thousands of hours of training and experience as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, with a Master's degree in Public Health Nutrition. She is passionate about helping women realize they can have a healthy, joyful relationship with food, and peace with themselves and their bodies at any size.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- What intuitive eating is all about, a way of eating that involves listening to internal cues rather than external rules, with the goal of returning to a more natural and healthy relationship with food
- The concept of intuitive eating, including recognizing and responding to body signals, balancing signals with nutritional needs, and overcoming fear of restricting food choices
- The difference between satisfying foods vs pleasurable foods
- The importance of self-compassion and unconditional permission to eat all foods, rather than striving for a specific body shape or ideal
- The limitations of body positivity, suggesting that it can be difficult to maintain a positive attitude towards one's body at all times, and that body neutrality offers a more realistic approach by acknowledging and accepting a range of emotions
- How to address the "why" behind nutrition habits, as it helps to change mindsets and lead to more sustainable and fulfilling lifestyle habits
- Practical tips for making self-care and nutrition more accessible and manageable for busy women, such as identifying small wants and desires and alternative ways to cope with emotional eating
This episode is jam-packed with great nuggets and takeaways that anyone can apply to their lives to help with healthy nutrition habits. Be sure to tune in and share the episode with someone you know or love.

There was a time in Peggy's life when she experienced a traumatic event that led to a constant state of fight or flight, wiring her brain in self-protection and pushing away authentic relationships due to distrust.
Although God used her to do some amazing things in her early life despite her skeletons, it was not until her 40s that Peggy became fed up with the fake, phony smile. With help, she finally unpacked and surrendered the basement of her heart to Christ, learned to smile from within, have fun, and enjoy life again.

Welcome to another empowering episode of "Arise: Living Your Life with Purpose and Confidence." today, I have a remarkable guest who embodies resilience, empowerment, and the unwavering pursuit of purpose.
April Barber Scales is a name synonymous with hope and transformation. She's the force behind "Fenced in Fighting for Freedom Advocacy," a startup business committed to advocating for the incarcerated, providing resources, and championing their journey to redemption. April's story is not just a testimony of survival; it's a beacon of inspiration for all.
April's life has been a tapestry of challenges, transformation, and service. She spent an astonishing 31 and a half years behind bars, enduring the harsh reality of the justice system. But she emerged from this ordeal stronger, driven by an unyielding determination to make a difference.
April's passion project was born from her remarkable journey. Incarcerated at just 15 years old, her driving force was her unborn child, and she was determined to be the parent she never had. Despite the obstacles, she held onto the dream of becoming the mother she aspired to be. Her son eventually grew up to be a Marine, and their bond is a testament to the strength of a mother's love.
Beyond her advocacy work, April also juggles a career in home health, caring for residents with dementia. Additionally, she's a personal trainer, exemplifying her commitment to overall well-being.
She penned four books during her time in prison, including "Fenced In Fighting for Freedom," a gripping account of her path to incarceration and release, along with "Quotes 365," "31 Days of Growth and Reflection," and "Memoirs of Suzie."
In this episode, April shares:
- How she advocates for incarcerated individuals and provides resources for their reentry into society
- How she journaled and wrote to cope with the lack of mental and physical exercise in prison, leading to the publication of four books
- Her story of resilience and determination in maintaining a positive mindset while incarcerated, with a focus on her drive to be a good parent and the contributions that led to their release
- plans to complete their AA in General Studies and pursue a passion for working with at-risk youth, hoping to provide a positive example and mentorship
- How her confidence stems from resiliency and a support system, including advocates and organizations that helped her heal and move forward
- Reflections on her journey since getting out of prison, including learning to drive, applying for jobs, and facing setbacks like the recent change in voting laws, which remind her that she's not truly free yet
- Encouragement for those who have been incarcerated to not sacrifice their dreams and hopes and to reach back and help someone else

This week, I sat down with Rose Jones, who inspires women through her story of being a domestic violence survivor. Rose is honest and straightforward, keeping it real with others and her community about the struggles she faces. She prides herself on telling her truth and creating a safe space for other women to do the same. Rose has accomplished a lot in her life. She is a mother of 4 beautiful children, a certified life and accountability coach, certified in several courses on domestic violence and trauma recovery, and graduated from college. But Rose does not let that define her. She knows her life is her power and that her worth comes from who she is, not what she accomplished, experienced, or gained.
Her goal is to help other women who have experienced similar experiences like domestic violence, trauma, and self–hate to understand their worth, embrace their stories, and heal from the traumatic situation through self-love, self-awareness, and community belongingness. What makes her an expert in this field is that she doesn't consider herself a highly expert; she is just a woman trying to help another woman get her life back. She says, "God is the true expert. He's just living out his purpose through Me."
In this episode, Rose:
- Opens up about her personal journey of surviving domestic violence, offering a raw and honest account of the challenges she faced
- Discusses some of the biggest hurdles she encountered during her healing process and shares valuable insights into how she overcame them
- Defines self-worth and explores the concept of self-worth while offering advice on how to break free from limiting it solely based on external accomplishments or experiences
- Discusses the importance and pivotal roles of self-love, self-awareness, and a sense of community belongingness in the healing journey for women who have experienced trauma or domestic violence
- Shares practical steps and implications that women can implement to start reclaiming their lives after experiencing trauma or self-hate
- Provides insights into how she approaches coaching and supporting women who may feel overwhelmed or intimidated by the idea of seeking help or embarking on their healing journey while creating a safe space for women to share their stories and the strategies she employs to help them embrace their experiences and find healing
Join us in this inspiring conversation as we delve deep into the journey of healing, self-discovery, and empowerment for survivors of domestic violence.
